Pacific Gas & Electric Time of Use Rates ETOUA versus E1 schedule Analysis

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) E1 Residential rates schedule still make sense for a lot of homeowners

I did some basic calculations and compared ETOU with the older E1 rate schedule. My analysis shows for an average single family home the new time of use (ETOUA) do not make any sense unless you really shift your energy usage and start all your cooking after 8pm. PG&E currently has two time of use rates ETOUA(3pm-8pm) and ETOUB (4pm-9pm). I honestly think ETOUB is even worse than ETOUA as it means that you start watching TV after 9pm.

I compared a single months bill of June under the two rate schedule scenarios and my calculations show that traditional E1 rates would still make sense for a lot of homes.

A spreadsheet for people to plug there own energy use numbers and check how their monthly bill would compare between ETOUA and E1 residential rate schedules can be found here
