Shailendra Singh, a struggling singer was given the break of his life to sing for the Rishi Kapoor in his debut movie Bobby. History has repeated itself after almost 25 years as another Shailendra is giving vocals for Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir Kapoor in his debut movie Saanwariya.
I happen to know Shailendra Hada because he was my brother's classmate. I also remember him singing in every single event at School, be it bhajans or awesome ghazals. As a matter of fact, our respective Father's were also classmates. I feel happy for him, check his vocals on this youtube link

Khalish
I just love this word...
Tum kaho to mein rok lo,
Jo tum kaho to nahi
Seene mein hain kaise Khalish
Teri kashish to nahin...
Enjoy this song "Tere Sawalon ke woh jawab" from the movie Manorama six feet under. It has the same effect as "Khamosh Raat, Sahmi Hawa" from the movie Takshak.

Rang De Basanti Chola
Just felt like posting this video on my blog. Ishmeet will be singing this song tomorrow for her play on Gaddar movement.
uk asian women
I have always love the way UK Punjabi women speak. The way they mix their sweet English accents with some words of Punjabi..adds an extra oomph factor. But unfortunately a recent study shows that they have the highest rate of suicide rate. Almost 80% of suicides are committed by Punjabi women in the UK.
I find this is very unfortunate and an huge shame for Punjabi's/Sikhs men. It is a shame that our women who have for centuries given birth to martyrs have to resort to such extreme measures. I just pray things get better.

I yearn to be with you
I do not know what got into me but recently I have this strong desire to meet the river Ganga. I feel like spending some time at the ghats and maybe even take a doobki in the waters probably somewhere more towards the northern end of Ganga.
I have this feeling that I will learn something when I will be there. Maybe about my ancestors or maybe myself.

my experiences in America
America is all about freedom of expression, religious tolerance and living the American dream. God only knows what this bloody living the American dream is all about. I will tell you something about my experiences searching for an apartment in this amazing country called America. It would not be a long story with lots of plots but a rather short one where I will tell you how an Indian can still feel completely alienated in this country.
I have always been living in apartment complexes so far in the last 6 years I have spent here. But this time around when my lease ended and my rent was increased yet again, bloody $1570 per month. Ishmeet and I decided that we should move out and look for an apartment outside the apartment communities. Thus began our journey to look for a home sweet home, close to my workplace, close to freeways, close to desi store and the usual stuff. Our first pick was a townhouse where the Caucasian manager was probably the finest actress I have seen. Ishmeet and I were too naive and felt that this would be it and how lucky we were to find this apartment. However, we never heard back from our actress manager. We learned our lesson or should I say were beginning to learn.
The second one was even better than the first one with a beautiful backyard. The apartment was shown to us by a gora son of a rich father. He too was a fine actor, showed us the house with lots of interest. However, he made one big mistake, he had told me earlier that he was going to fax the application to his father but he folded my application right in front of me. Two days later, we came to know that the unit was rented to someone else. The third and fourth ones were non-goras and promptly offered me their apartments but we did not take those places for our personal reasons. The fifth one was again a gora and man this guy topped it all, I could literally see on this goras face that he did not like my face. But I stayed there and irritated him even more. You can tell that by this time I had learned all my lessons. We finally took the sixth one, luckily this time the gora liked us and we liked the apartment.
This entire experience was an eye opener and showed me that as long as desis live in protected environments or rather try to keep their eyes closed they can continue to live this unknown American dream.

two controversies
Recently on SAREGAMAPA the three pakistani contestants got the lowest number of votes based on the Independence Day Episode. I should point that they stood in bottom three based on voting from all over the world, as Zee TV claims. To my utter surprise they introduced this random controversy that they got the lowest number of votes just because they sang Pakistani patriotic songs therefore, there should be no elimination in that particular episode. I do not like this at all...bloody bringing politics, controversies and all this country based tatti in a simple song competition.
The second controversy I cannot think right now because my mother-in-law made some yummy chicken soup for me and after drinking my soup I cannot focus on this blog.
Alvi and Madhur were here for the weekend and we had a very nice time. It is always good to be around good friends. I was meeting Madhur after a gap of two years and he was a changed person. Much more opinionated and strong person. I liked it a lot.

speakers
facebook....
Whats up with facebook? Did they not think that hiring all of the best marketing folks in the world will be an over kill? I finally succumbed and joined facebook four days ago, I honestly felt that the site is nothing great. The only good thing about facebook is the small font size and that it is not blocked at my place of work.
One recommendation: Agnee, buy this CD. Its worth it.
And yes speakers was all about buying good quality speakers. Yesterday I burned a CD after a long time and noticed that listening pleasure of any song to a large extent depends on the quality of speakers you have. I guess a good speaker subsitutes for a Parle, a Topi, a Gandhi or a Shukla.

The Gandhi Protests
Denied the permanent U.S. residency they'd been promised, high-skilled workers are taking to the streets in nonviolent protest. Thousands of bouquets were sent to the USCIS (US Immigration Services) and streets of San Jose saw engineers/doctors/other skilled workers on the streets.
Finally on July 17th, USCIS yielded and accepted all demands. I do not know how much role the flowers or the peaceful march played in all this but it was good to see everyone unite and stand together for a cause for once.

SaReGaMaPa
I have always been a sucker of quality music and one of the best shows India ever produced well before American Idol was "SaReGaMa". I think even SaReGaMa was inspired by Meri Awaaz Suno but somehow SaReGaMaPa was our family show. I remember Papa and I would leave everything to watch this show and even Mummy used to finish her chores well in time to watch this show.
These days Ishmeet and I watch SaReGaMaPa and also Amul Star Voice of India. What amazes me is how much one show has impacted our country. Not so long ago when all we had were two or three main lead voices, these shows provided hope. Music which was traditionally nurtured in selected Punjabi, Bengali, Tam-Brahm and Marathi houses all of a sudden became an option for kids all of over India. I am sure so many parents would have felt that they should teach their kids music seriously just after getting inspired by SaReGaMa.
The end result is quite evident, we have so many quality voices in the industry (no no not Himesh) that every song gets a different voice. It has made life difficult for people who take Antakshri very seriously because remembering so many different lyricist, singers and music directors in a tough job now.

khilone ka dabba
Sometimes things around me our like a khilone ka dabba. Its colorful and full of so many desirable toys (read things). Without a doubt, I want all of them but they are so entangled and randomly placed that I just have no clue which one to pick.
I got my first issue of "The Economist" yesterday and as I expected I ended up reading most of it. I was shocked that one magazine had so much information and articles that were interesting.
I watched the IIFA awards too last night and I must say that I was happy to see Lara Dutta anchoring the show alongwith Boman Irani. Certain coffee drinking elements were not there and it felt good.
My in-laws are coming to visit us in a three days and I am mentally preparing myself for it. Hopefully it would be all perfect.
Mrs. Sonia Di Patil looks like a character from the south park. I honestly do not want her as the President of India. I think even her entire CV is build up on the issue that she is a female aur "Madam ka naam bhejto vote mil jaayega" attitude has brought her where she is.
Now you know what I meant by Khilone Ka Dabba.

one of those days
When you wake up and discover that you slept in an incorrect posture as a result you have a pain in your neck. I think neck pain is second only to toothaches. Somehow you manage to get out of bed and as you are brushing your teeth in a still sleepy mode. God only knows why, all of a sudden you picture an entire family standing with candles in their hands outside a cinema hall. You try to shrug this dream and try to think about Lara Dutta's awesome legs (am I allowed to say that now?). But something still bothers, as you cannot get over the thought, that why this dream occured at the first place. You finish brushing and go to the living room to catch the latest headlines on Aajtak and bang...the news reader says...10 years ago on this very day hundreds lost their lives in Uphar Cinema Fire. Not to my surprise the families are still waiting for justice which we all know will come in another 10 years.
I just pray to God to give strength to all the families who lost someone dear.

miss you always
It has been six years since we parted. You were there with me for four wonderful years and not a single day in the last six years has passed when I have not missed you or thought about you.
Looking forward to meeting you again soon.

The Bhullars ...
Okay there is no pro-sikh agenda here :) but I find it rather strange that I made the Saragrahi post and a few days later I read this story about the bravery of Bhullar family. A short one but still worth a few minutes.

300 Spartans and 21 sikhs

While talking with Pathak the other day about this new movie called 300, I said that there are many instances of such bravery in sikh history too. To my surprise he immediately said and in his words .."abe sachi chadha, mere mann mein pahli baat yehi aayi thi, ki agar meine yeh movie banaayi hoti to shaayad sikhs warriors par hi banaayi hoti". Today I bumped into this interesting poster on the Battle of Saragarhi where 21 sikhs laid down their life's fighting against a huge army of afghans. Hopefully the creaters of this poster will not mind this.

1971
I want to write just one thing about this movie '1971'. It is one of the finest war movies that Bollywood has ever produced. The movie is very close to Lakshya to the levels of impact it leaves on you but with much much more heart.
The story is based on true facts and had to be told. Director Mira Nair once said, we indians should learn to tell our stories. Director Amrit Sagar has done full justice in telling this story that every Indian should know about. I would recommend all my friends to watch this movie on a warm sunny afternoon when they have all the time to think.

its all about you
Yes this post is all about her...the girl in my life...my wife Ishmeet. What makes her so different is her immense love for food. Matlab hum dono bhaithe hain and all of a sudden she remembers something about that nukkad wala omelette guy, they way he used to put full green mirchi's in the omelette, the amount of butter he used to put in the omelletes. Uff...and the way she describes it makes me wonder..yeh kya ladki hain yaar yeh. Yeh to buss ek kissa hain....I do not feel writing more on this topic all of a sudden but she mentions the paranthe wali gali and so many of her favorite restuarants.
So many things have happened recently....Spiderman-3 sucked all of a sudden. TaRaRumPum was strictly okayish. Parle is writing really great blogs and Topi is writing nothing. I met Mallad at Denny's after a desi party that he attended and was surprised to see some old H10 dwellers, also coming from the same desi party.
I am finally coming to the point in my job where I do not feel like working. I am surprised that it happened to me so early on..in just 3 years. I guess yeh dil maange more, maybe another omelette :)

I have fever
Yes friends, I am down with fever on a Thursday night so everyone in my office will think that I am taking Friday off not due to fever but to sleep. It sucks specially because there was an important meeting on Friday that I wanted to attend.
Maybe I have fever because I am sick of Ash-Abhi marriage news on Aajtak. Thanks to Jhanvi for coming into the picture and saving all of us.

Abhay Deol and Ali Zafar
I think both of them are the underdogs who would finish off big.
Abhay Deol to me is one of the best actors among the younger lot. I especially like the way he is comfortable in front of the camera. The ease and smoothness though not evident when he is dancing shows when he acts.
Ali Zafar, kya awaaz hain bhai. Even though I have supported Atif Aslam from the days when he just started and much much before anything big in bollywood happened. Ali Zafar has the voice and talent.

canoeing
I finally got my canoeing pictures from the recent Hawaii trip. There is a small story behind these pictures. The people who owned the canoe were also taking pictures of us and were charging $20 for one picture and $40 for the entire CD. Bloody expensive I must say!
So Ron sitting up front was purchasing one picture for his kid and I know you all know what I did next. I offered him $20 on face value and gave him my business card and asked him to get the entire CD. Ron finally mailed me the CD this week. I like my look in this picture :)

Hawaii ho aaye bhai log
Bhai log, so I surprized Ishmeet with a trip to Hawaii for our first anniversary. The place is simply awesome, you got to go there. Overall, an expensive but worth it trip.
I am watching Filmfare Awards as I am making this post. Being a kid we used to love watching these awards and no matter what I say, I still do enjoy watching Filmfare Awards. The award made me remember Sanjeev Kumar for his performance in Aandhi. Interestingly Sanjeev Kumar Aandhi's performance had edged out Amitabh's Deewar peformance for a best actor award.

Delhi Heights
The music of "Delhi Heights" is catching up on me....especially the songs "Kitne Der", "Aaja Nachle" and "Ey Gori". Rabbi Shergill has impressed me though the songs took a while to get in my head.
Another cool thing I noticed that finally there is a romantic song for sikh guys...hehe. I am not talking about the Bhangra ones or the Mika one, in which he answers Rakhi Sawant on why he took her puppy.
I am talking about a song from the album "Ustad and Divas". The song has been sung beautifully by Sunidhi Chauhan and goes like "Moore piyaa ke lambe lambe kes, bhaiyye jiya ko, bhola bhala bhes". I am sure a lot of my friends will like it.

Bay Area Spinning Wheel Festival
I attended the Bay Area Spinning Wheel Festival today. Like the previous one it was an amazing experience as the festival showcased some of the best movies related to sikh issues. I would like to showcase two of them here.
First one: Amu
This film starring Konkona Sensharma and Ankur Khanna (from Yun Hota to Kya Hota) raises a lot of questions which are still unanswered after the 1984 massacre. A must watch, very well directed and truly amazing.
Second one: The Gold Bracelet
Written, Directed and Produced by Kavi Raz is another very well made movie on how the lives of thousands of sikhs changed in the USA post 9/11. I later had a chance to meet Kavi Razji and it was a pleasure talking to him.

denial
I am sure about only one thing right now. That one thing is that I am leading a life of denial. I miss India too much but still do not put in a effort to go back, how weak is that. India is where my heart is, I miss the rickshaw's, the smoke and talking to every damn stranger on the street. I miss sitting with parents and having a cup of tea. I miss talking to my brother and fighting with him. I want to take Ishmeet to powai and show her all the places. I pray to God to help me here.
Lately, a lot of things have been going in my head. I want to do so many things and yet I cannot do anything. All I am doing right now is finishing every damn project that comes my way, be it work or personal life. I want to be a better sikh, I want to be a better Indian, I want to be a better human being, I want to be a better engineer, I want to be a better husband, I want to be a better son, I want to be a better brother, I want to be a better friend. There are so many "I want" in my head. I guess I should stop thinking about myself and look at the bigger picture, sort of like Gandhiji's Talisman which used to be there on the first left hand paper of every NCERT textbook. It read something like this:
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?
Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
Alright mates.....lets wake up tomorrow and try to do something good for someone else with no expecations. This word "sewa" as I am writing it, is soothing me so much I cannot express it in words. It feels like I got all my answers.

so I watched Guru
Overall 3.5 stars for the movie. It is a good movie but I felt Mani Ratnam had to put 2-3 songs at places where they could have been avoided. Aishwarya like always is out of place and looks better only when she gets old. Abhishek fubext hain and Gulzar should stop challenging Rehman by giving him ultra-strange lyrics. Nonetheless, Rehman is awesome.
Ishmeet and I had randomly decided to go for the movie today since we have something planned for tomorrow night. So we reach the theatre and within the next 5 minutes I see three familiar faces Mulki, Sumo and Anu. There were other junta affiliated to these guys and the crowd today was in a freakoo mood. Overall, mazaa aaya.
Before this, earlier today in the evening I cooked Biryani start to finish in a record time of 1 hour. Anyways, Guru is a good weekend watch, enjoy it.

So I read a book after a long time
Yaar ekdum hi senti kar diya...I will just put my version of the last lines in this wonderful book.
"You know it is strange, I might have passed out of IIT, but in some ways, my soul is still there. Maybe in hostel 2 corridors, TV room, MB, meta department or at chinko's.

Ya Rabba
One of those days when you wake up with a song in your head. Kailash Kher as Topi puts it so nicely has a earthy raw feel in his voice.
Ya Rabba De De koi Jaan bhi Agar..
Dilbar Pe Ho Na Koi Asar...
This song carries the crux of the movie Salaam-E-Ishq. I will give Sameer a pass grade on the lyrics and he has been given an exit seat on the Bus. This has significantly increased his chances of survival.
I am in the process of watching the movie Vivaah. I tried watching the movie yesterday but could only manage half of it. Went to Gurdwara Sahib Fremont last night and got my hands of this interesting book "Essays on Guru Nanak". I will try to write if I read something interesting.

Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth"
Just finished watching this documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore (the almost President of US). I recommend all my friends to watch this one. Even though we all strongly feel about applying and taking initiatives to reduce global warming. After watching all the graphics and data in the documentary which clearly presented the impact of global warming over the last 30 years, I must say, I was shocked and to some extent terrified.

I came back from Atlanta yesterday. I was with Harpreet for 4 days, it was a very pleasant holiday. We relaxed during the first 1.5 days and played Wii for the next 2.5 days. Its amazing how much fun you can have with these advanced video games. Harpreet and I were at our all time lukha best during the trip. Infact, I even got a taana from Ishmeet that I seem to be so happy with Harpreet..hehe. Will upload some pictures from our trip to a german town called Helen pretty soon.
Music recommendation for you all from the movie Anwar. Awesome music, I am telling you this young music director Mithoon is going to go a long way. For those who do not know him, he gave you "Tere Bin" recently.

shore ka shor
I yearn for the sound of waves striking continuously on the shore. This is one sound that surpasses any other sound with its presence. It even surpasses the sound of you heart and mind and all you can feel, hear and think about is the noise of the sea.
That will be all.
That will be all.

I am begining to like Guru's music
This song "Ay Hairathe" will be loved by a lot and some will just listen to this thinking lyricist is "so funny only naa". But as soon as Alka Yagnik comes into the picture, you will realize that this is a lovely song. I love Hariharan's voice and his voice according to me just keeps getting better. A.R. Rehman led chorus make the song more interesting. Overall it is not an amazing song but listen to it for Alka Yagnik and Hariharan's voice.
Other good songs are tere bina (mazedaar song) and jaage hain, but this is an A.R. Rehman album so the songs which are your personal favorite change with time.

old pictures

I cannot sleep, I am watching Pink Floyd play in my living room. Seems like their music penetrates inside you and flows in your blood. I was just browsing through some old pictures and would like to share a few of them. The one on the left is from our Kurta Day. You have Nishant, Sumit, Amrish, Prateek, Me, Alvi, Soham, Vivek, Manish, Prashant in this picture.
Next one is an even amazing one. This one was taken during our fourth year corrosion lab. We did learn a lot during this lab class but it was more than the just oxidation and reduction. I remember Bhandari and Somani used to take off in the middle of the lab for other more important stuff. Look at Sidharth Bammi cleaning his ear at the back...hahahaha.
You can see Harpreet, Parle, Ajay, Me and Sandeep in this picture. In addition you can see Sidharth, Rdot and Raghav Pradeep on the back. This picture perfectly shows what exactly we used to do in this class...

yeh hain meri kahaani
Major senti maarne ka mood kar raha hain but nahi maaronga because each one of you who reads this blog would be like "boss apni life mein koi kum tension, pain ya boriyat nahi hain"..hehe
So Mr and Mrs. Ranade are in town shopping for furniture. Actually I wanted to meet them for lunch but Ishmeet called me at the last moment and since "I am afraid of my wife" I did not go to meet them. Ishmeet padh le quotes wala part. She had a bet with me that I cannot publicly say this. Anyways, I am meeting them for a coffee later in the eveninng.
My current mood is like so dull...I am sitting on my bed with no lights in the room and as I am looking outside through my window, it is so sullen. The old chinese man is standing in the parking lot next to my favorite parking spot and is smoking as usual. He must be on his second packet already. I always think about talking with him about this life and sharing mine with him. But, he always has this local smoky layer of protection surrounding him. This smoke layer is very thick and I never dared to penetrate it or come close to it. Therefore, I changed my parking spot.
Parle has started actively blogging these days and Topi is happy that I am writing too. Between I got my car washed today, she needed it and had been telling me ever so sweetly that she needed to get the facial, manicure and pedicure. So there you go...yeh thi meri kahaani (abhi tak)

SK=AR
Just finished the movie Jaan-e-man. Something which crossed my mind when I saw Salman Khan (SK) crying in the movie is that he is the male Aishwarya Rai (AR). Both cannot act but look good when they are crying on the screen and have nothing to say. Funny that they form the "skar" (scar) on the face of bollywood. Waise the song "sau-dard" in the movie was a good one and Sonu Nigam again excels.
I am visiting Harpreet on Thanksgiving weekend for 4 days. Interestingly Alvi is visiting me next weekend. So next two weeks are going to be interesting :) .
Between, who do you think will buy craigslist.com and when?

crossy time
So I have decided probably out of my immense boredom since Ishmeet is in India that I will be preparing for a half marathon. I went practicing day before yesterday and since my love handles are so much in love with me lately, I decided to start off with only 3 miles. So the idea for this blog came to me as I was running.
I do not know about others but there is something I always do when I run and that is, I get flashbacks (I do not want to write I dream). Honestly, when I am running somehow I end up thinking about the past from a runners perspective. And one flashback which always occurs is from my first inter-hostel crossy. It was my second semester and I was running the inter-hostel crossy for the first time. I remember people in our hostel talking "Abey Sari nahi aaya" and I think Sari nahi aaya tha till the start of crossy.
So the crossy started and I without a great strategy went on running to the best of my abilities. I remember Chuddu or Rajat Garg telling me I am in top 40 at the guest house. So after the guest house the next landmark is the convocation building and after that there is a long down hill portion. I remember I was trying to just hang in there without losing too many positions and then it happened. I looked over my shoulder and I saw him literally sprinting towards the down hill road. It was Sari !! and it was magical. I got such a kick out of it and I without a thought just followed his energy. If he overtook 15 guys and I probably overtook 8 atleast in the next 1 Km. He was soon out my sights :) and kept on going.
I think he finished 19th and I was 29 (or 31), do not remember for sure. To this date whenever I am running I look over my shoulder and imagine a Sari just sprinting away.
There are many other stories related to crossy at IIT, I will write about them slowly because I feel they have to be told. There was an Alumni Inter-IIT PAF/Social in Bay Area yesterday. The brotherhood across the IITs was so evident and I guess its like wine. Do I need to say who won it?

memory lane
This blog was meant to be written two days ago. The purpose of this blog is just to make sure I somehow have these memories written somewhere.
First one, I think probably my third year mid-terms and as usual its Topi and myself listening to radio and trying to study. Shukla's steel trunk was borrowed because Topi can somehow never study without playing some tabla.
All of a sudden a Qawwaali starts playing on my Videocon dubba..
"Oh mubaarak Tujhe Hamnava mil gaya.."
Ab Tere pyaar ka Aina mil gaya"
God knows what happened we just lost it...there was something about the environment. We had these sudden attacks usually when we enjoyed something momentarily and lived that moment to the fullest. We both thoroughly enjoyed this song. Topi even wrote the lyrics and we sang it 2-3 times Qawwali style that night before giving up on it. I vaguely remember we even sang this song at some Meta event.
(I saw the video of this song 2 days ago, 6 years after I had heard this song for the first time that night. It is from the movie Ghulam-e-Mustafa.)
The second one "Lassi-oye.." it is my first song ever..hahaha with Gandhi (music by Topi). It was our second year and everyone was beginning to accept that Meta department was going to be our home for the next 3 years. Some professor was not in the class on time and all of a sudden I do not remember how someone said we need a song...maybe I do not even remember it correctly now. All I remember is Gandhi and I were there in front of the class and in total freak mode we composed and sang this song "Lassi-Oye" right there.
memories....Spoke with Saurbh Nishant after almost 2 years today. I envy him because he goes to run on Sameer Hill every weekend and I run on treadmill every other day :) no no I am not cribbing...hehehe

deliberate practice
I read an article on the importance of deliberate practice and how it differentiates the average achievers from those who excel in their fields. Basically this is what great achievers have in common. What is it about?
Its all about challenging yourself to excel and improve upon your existing skill levels continuously. Thats what it takes to be great. Just to quote few examples, Tiger Woods was 18 when he got is US Amateur Championship, everyone knows that. But not everyone knows that he had already put in 15 plus years of practice..interesting haina? I found it an extreme example since his father had supposedly introduced him to Golf at a very early stage of his life (18 months).
Lets take another example, the man I simply loved seeing play in my first year summers. Name is Michael Jordan, Chicago Bulls, the finest NBA action I have ever seen. Scotty Pippen and Michael Jordan in action...totaaal. Without digressing anymore, Michael Jordan supposedly got knocked off his high school team but fought his way up and used to practice even after his NBA team was done practicing.
So lets all do a little bit of deliberate practice to improve ourselves and enjoy the difference.

something something
There is something about this combo = Alisha Chenoi/Vasundhra Das + Sonu Nigam + Mahalaxmi that I simply love.
Just came back from the movie Don and the fubext thing about the movie was this song "Aaj Ki Raat" superbly sung and the music reminds of those 70s and 80s era when the heroines used to dance in front the villain towards the climax....ekdum awesome feeling.
fubext is a new word created by me and I think in years to come it will get really popular among young kids .

mera kuch samaan
"Mera Kuch Samaan, Tumhaare Pass Pada Hain" this song from the movie Izzazat is supposedly even Gulzar's favorite. There is a line in this song ..."ek sau solah chaand ki raatein, ek tumhaare kaandhe ka til". I have discussed the significance of 116 with Gandhi, Parle, Topi and later with Ishmeet. I distinctly remember discussing with Gandhi about 28 days of lunar cycle but could never figure out why Gulzar used specifically 116 in the song.
The same topic got raised again while Bunnu and Pathak were here. And there Bunnu had the answer....and it was beautiful. So here it goes...
So Anuradha Patel (Maya) had spent four months with Naseer in the movie. So 30x4 = 120 days and in four months there are four nights of amavasya in four months...haina haina....bhaiyyan....badhiya. Chit prasann ho gaya.

the longest weekend

So we met, Bunnu, Pathak, Padma and me. As expected we tried to recap everything about IIT/H2 we could possibly think off. We told stories from our freshie times to our valfi's and discussed everyone with whom we had shared those great times. Sari, topi, chuddu, kabra brothers, skudge, bongi, kamath, chamaad, mooli, shukla, ambuj, pandya, pawan, basant, rishi rajan, bhurji, tau, OP, sarang, mhaskar, mhaskar cats, rajat, auri, ankur mohan, dhar, attri, TRP, munni, uttam, gaggu, kanhaiya, booba-lan and the list goes on. It was two nights of pure unadulterated cack sessions. There were moments of silence in between but the three seasonsed cacko's continued to come up with new stories. It was simply the best all nighter I have had in US.

Some other highlights of the weekend were that I also came to know about the snoring skills of Bunnu. We even managed to make a video of it :) (maybe I can send to those who want). Padma's birthday was also celebrated in style. However, Bunnu left this morning and Pathak's later this weekend.
I tried thinking about all I did this weekend, but somehow I am getting this strange feeling as if we were all together for 5-6 days or the whole thing happened in the past. Maybe the reason for this feeling is that I had similar fun moments only in the past in the place a lot of us call hostel two.

friends
I read this quote while waiting for Forbes.com to load the story I was interested in reading...here it goes
"One of the best thing about old friends is that you can be stupid with them".So true, isn't it?
All my friends, we became the professionals we always wanted to be. Life somehow threw us all apart in different parts of the world. Friends with whom I sang those stupid songs, ate bhurgi at 4:00am in the morning. Friends with whom I drank, danced, played and spent the most memorable moments.....and I keep thinking its all gone. I even hesitate calling them thinking where would I start the conversation. Then one day I meet them and after the 1 hour or so its all back. All the stupidity is back...the jokes, the pranks, the bull shit. Keeping it short, being back with your buddies is priceless.

Ahista Ahista
Before I move to what I want to say I have to boast that I am finally running again. Ran 2.5 miles in 20 minutes and it felt good..
So I watched another movie just now. The name of the movie... Ahista Ahista. A very well directed movie with a simple story and wonderful performances. The movie hadvsomething usually missing from Hindi movies called characterization. It has been done nicely in this movie. Every character in the movie is nicely carved and has its own presence in the movie. I am impressed by Abhay Deol's performance. This is his second movie and to me he is already among finest actors of his generation. Music has been used nicely in the movie. So basically good man ki laltein ..the movie was delightful. (3.5 stars out of 5).
I feel so happy after writing these reviews.
Ishmeet's birthday is coming and I do not know what to gift her. So leave suggestions people, she like diamonds which I cannot afford...hehehe

no title
I somehow cannot think of a title as I am writing this blog. I do not even have a set idea for this blog. Infact this is not a blog, this is more like a diary. Yeah I think this is indeed a diary.
Having decided this is a diary, I think I cannot describe what is going in my head. The reason behind that is that so many of will read this and in the end I will end up like a drama king. Nevertheless, I feel like writing and I want to write so much, loads of it. Parle used to say if Chadha is happy his email lengths are short.
There has recently been not a single good music album out...that sucks. There is another interesting story I would like to share. I recently chatted with Jaswinder Singh, he is a sikh guy who sings ghazals and he is really good honestly. I remember he won SaReGaMa contest in my second year. He is a cool guy and maybe I will get to hang out with him when he will be visiting Bay Area alongwith Javed Akhar (yeah yeah topi is giving gaali to him) and Shabana Azmi.
The idea behing the show is also very unique. Shabana and Showoff Akhtar will be discussing poetry by Kaif and after a poem is discussed Jaswinder will be singing that particular poem. I am looking forward to it.
Writing is a good therapy, no matter how disconnected my thoughts are in this blog, I feel much better.

Ann Arbor, Michigan
I was watching Tushar Kapoor's interview (the remote was kept on the other corner of the room). He was asked the question about his fondest memories in life. He said "the time I spent in Ann Arbor, Michigan...his undergrad school".
I liked his answer, not because I too attended Ann Arbor, Michigan but because I like people who like their undergraduate schools.

I think I need to watch Fight Club again. My life is missing it.
Those of you who do not get what it means have to watch Fight Club.
Also I want to pay my regards to Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahib.

desh mere
desh mere desh mere, meri jaan hain tu
desh mere desh mere, meri aan hain tu
I think only after coming to US, in a alien country I have realized that I am an Indian. Honestly, for someone like me it took me to get outside of India, away from Indianness to realize how much love you I had for my country.
Being a sikh it is very difficult for me to say 1984 happenings did not affect me. Ofcourse I do feel hurt that sikhs were slaughtered in 1984. Still even after what happened in 1984, I love India, thats where my heart is. I will not say the same thing about Indian judicial system though.
desh mere desh mere, meri aan hain tu
I think only after coming to US, in a alien country I have realized that I am an Indian. Honestly, for someone like me it took me to get outside of India, away from Indianness to realize how much love you I had for my country.

omkaara
Yaar omkaara dekh lo bass. Movie has screenplay and direction in certain scenes which just touches you. Also the music is just terrific, specially the waking up song. First time I saw a movie with a waking up song, and the beauty with which Vishal has used this song....uffffff.
Other than this, life is okay. Bammi has moved to Bay Area, Topi is busy hunting job, Gandhi is already at it.

a dialogue from the movie Syriana
Intense movie and a dialogue I loved in the begining of the movie.
A father and son (both pakistani) are sad that the company they were working for has been bought by Chinese. Sad over the new development and with fear of losing their jobs, the father tells the son:
"Chinese bade kharab driver hote hain, inhe gaadi chalana to door dhone bhi nahi dena chahiye"
I liked the dialogue more when I heard it but somehow after writing, it does not seem to be that funny..
anyhow

hbs working knowledge
A nice source of cool articles by the best in the fields. Give it a shot, you will learn something for sure.

I am going to watch Omkara today, seems to be a good movie. I just realized again yesterday how much I do not like loud punjabi's boasting their personal wealth. Also the artificial nature of their so called friendship with each other. No wonder that love increases exponentially as a function of the alcohol content in their blood.

why me?
I used to wonder how does Babaji select the chosen ones. I am not defining chosen for what but somehow tonight as I sit alone in my living room I have this feeling that I am chosen.
But why me?
But why me?

News
So here is the news. There is a movie coming out on the Komagata Maru incident. Dayam now I have to rethink the story of my first movie. It feels really bad that you nurture an idea for so long and just because you do not have the required resources someone else goes with the idea before you. Anyhow, my biwi made some awesome aloo ke paraounthe today. I have put on weight and need to start running again. Work related frustations are at an all time high.

aaj maamla sad hain
Khamosh sa afsaana paani se likha hota
Na tumne kahan hota, Na humne suna hota.
One of the days when you give a lot of thinking about where your life is headed to. Did you take the right decision ? And hazaaar other what if's. All this made me really flustered and sad to some extent. And I found recluse with nothing else but a song from Gulzar Sahib.
That will be all.
Kitne saahil dhoonde koi saamne na aaya,
Jab majhdaar mein doobe saahil saame aaya,
Tumne saahil ko pahle bichaaya hota.
Na tumne kahan hota, Na humne suna hota.

yeh hain meri kahani
Yeh hain meri kahani,
Kabhi khushi kabhi paani,
Paani sirf aankhon mein nahi,
Aaj Dil bhi Rota hain,
Buss ab aur nahi,
Aaj na jaane kyun dil bahut chota hain.

He did it again...
Howcome A.R. Rehman does it. I am now listening to the songs which probably 1/10 th of the world would be listening to in a few days. I am listening to the songs of the movie "Rang De Basanti " and I swear to God I did not even check who the music director is. One song down and I knew it was A.R. Rehman. Now thats what I call talent and hardwork personified. You can learn so much from his dedication and the way he excels each and every time.
I had a bad day at work, same bloody simulations not working shit. But now I feel much better...inspired, blood running in my veins and arteries again. Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna ab hamare dil mein hain.
Mad respect...

reality TV
I like reality TV....yes yes yes I do. Sometimes when I am not able to sleep and have too much vehla time. I have seen episodes of Real World at night. On Thursdays there was a time last year when I used to watch Apprentice. I have seen episodes of Survivor series too. When my parents were visiting me, I got addicted to watching Fame Gurukul. And to top it as soon as I will finish this entry of blog I will watch an episode of Indian Idol 2 ....I love this bloody low IQ shit. hahaha.....people who visit my blog at times might be thinking why this guy never posts intellectual stuff like "why are we living this life the way we are living it and are we happy?". My answer to them is that I just try to give everyone a break from this complicated and stressful life and I take them to this magnificent brain dead world. Since i just wrote "people who ....might be thinking..." in the last line, the whole idea of this blog got defeated right then. See now you guys must be thinking what happened to the whole reality thing ?...stop thinking for once!! and go brain dead...can you ?

doing it right
Doing it right the first time!
I think is really difficult specially if you are falling in love. You try to give too much importance to the person in your life and she does not reciprocates, you feel hurt, broken et. al. Whose fault is it ?
Its your's jackass, why the hell are you making her so important at the first place. You have been such a sensible person for so long in your life and now when you have the time for love...yes you timed it jackass!! You never paid attention to the opposite sex during your career building years, didn't you ? And now when you have the time for it, you are doing it with 4.1 GPA. You have always been like this jackass, always trying to be perfect at whatever you want to do. Too bad, only this time, she is busy with her career.
Solution: patience and keep getting those A+'s

new laptop and Kalyug strikes again
I recently got a new laptop from my daftar. Its a decent HP one, I like it, but I honestly had no excitement whatsoever. I guess it is an age thing, as you grow older things which would have really made you restless and would capture your interest, no longer matter. In other words, there are other things which matter more now.
A friend of mine told me about the music of a new movie "Kalyug". The music is strictly okay and they have copied Atif Aslam's song "Aadat" to such an extent that the song appears three times in the album. Jal version of the song is also present in the album. Dayam!!!....biyaatches!!! when will they stop doing this and there is a song which did not do any justice to Raahat Fateh Ali Khan's talent. Before I forget, I must say they have screwed with the lyrics of the "Aadat".
I will try to write more often now. I think I want to write again.

two points
I have made this realization that a sikh youth from Canada is more anti-Indian than guys from any other foreign country. I was pondering as to why this could be the case based on the observations I made while browsing through sikhportal and earlier sikhpal. First reason could be that majority of sikhs who believed in the idea of a seperate sikh state (read country) must have moved to Canada once the movement was obliterated in India. Canada has always been an easier place to migrate than USA (maybe also UK not sure). So this resulted in a lot of like minded people who were already very anti-India (maybe for reasons obvious to them) to be together again but this time in Canada.
These people have been successful in passing on information/idealogy to the youth in Canada through programmes at Gurdwaare or elsewhere. I am not trying to say there is anything wrong in this, because these people were closer to the real happenings of the past and it is obvious that they would pass on whatever they can to the younger generation. That brings me to my second point, that sikh youth of today has four fractions 1) youth still believing in the idea of seperate state and strongly anti-indian 2) youth who do not believe in the idea of a seperate sikh-state but are not anti-india, 3) youth who do not want a seperate state and are very much pro-india, and 4) youth who just does not care about these things.
Without digressing from my first point, that why youth in Canada is so anti-India I would like to state that sikh guys I have met in US are very much pro-India and I never felt any hatred in them for India. Again these were my personal observations and I could be wrong. And as stated above the second point is very critical for the sikh youth of today because they need to realize that a seperate state India is much more than having a piece of land. I am sure they understand this too but still for someone so pro-India like me I cannot say much more than mistakes happen and to forgive is divine.

another night
Another night is about to engulf me.....what was different today ? nothing in particular to be shared in this blog. But yeah! I cooked Rajhma today and I had a very fulfillng meal today. Like my Mom always says "Aap na mariye te swarag na jaaiye", so true right ?..I had to overcome all my laziness to cook myself a good dinner...because I do not have no family to cook me a decent meal..hehehe enough senti. But as I wrote the last line it just struck me, I had left home in September 1997, fours years in IIT and now nearly four years in US...phewwww!!!....but the good news is that mummy and papa are coming to US hee haw!!!. Chalo I will listen to some music and try to sleep.

Parineeta
Bliss is the word...what beauty..what happiness....mazaa hi aa gaya...kya sweet movie hain. I had seen Bimal Roy's Parineeta couple of months back just because I wanted to see every possible movie of his. Loved that version a lot..the eyes talking, amazing script and the way love was presented in that era was so sweet and innocent.
Just came back from 2005 version of the same movie based on Sarat Chandra Chatto... novel. This time too director has created something beautiful, as Abercrombie t-chirts say "You will be served",
Yes Sir!, I was served today.
A must watch, the actress Vidya Balan has arrived...amazing performances and the way this particular song goes "Raatiya Kaali Kaali Raatiya" and the man sitting next to the hand-rikshaw lights his cigarette. All you feel is just Bliss..with a capital B. A timeless classic presented so nicely.

Fathers Day
Guys as they grow up keep getting more attached to their Moms.....and I guess thats how the whole concept of "Mama's son" comes. Though I did not used to respect all these Father/Mother/ Dat celebrations but as I am sitting on this Saturday afternoon, just felt like thanking my Papa...his name is S. Harbhajan Singh Chadha....and I can only hope to be such a wonderful person he is and felt like thanking him. I dedicate this song...by Josh Groban to him:
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

Raat Hamaari
Raat Hamaari To, Chaand ki Saheli Hain,
Kitne Dino ke Baad, Aayee Woh Akeli Hain.
Sandhya ki Baati bhi koi bujha de aaj
Andhere se jee bharke Karni hain baatein aaj
ufff a masterpiece of Parineeta forced me to write these lines so that 10 yrs down the line I may read them again. I assumed blogger.com would exist at that time. Makhi left for India today and like all of us was obviously so excited and happy. Alvi is finishing his PhD these days and Gandhi is also working hard towards his PhD. Pathak bought a mo-bike.....cool eh...
Was a really busy week at work with lots of things which went above my head but I am hoping to try to understand all of it as time passes by.

Puri Sahib
I feel sad that I would not see my Pasha again. Growing up Hero was one of my favorite films. Everytime we used to go to Delhi; bonnie, sonu, monu and me would be watching Hero again and again. And the who can forget these lines "Mat bhool Jackie yeh Bhasha tujhe Pasha ne sikhai hain". Yes this Pasha who became more of a character actor later in his career gave memorable performances in Gardish and Viraasat. These two performances flash in front of me as I am writing this blog. Aur haan Mogambo khush hua....aur aaj so gaya :(
Another of my brothers favorite lines from Saudagar.. "Balli Ram phone cut kar"

Meri lau (jyoti/fame)
Meri Lau Hawaaon se Jhagad kar Jee Uthi,
Mere Har Andhere ko Ujaale Pee Gaye,
Tune Hasske mujse Muskaraane ko Kahan,
Meri Mann ke Mausam Gulmohar se ho gaye.
Pata nahin I felt like writing again today. Its a strange feeling...feeling of coming back to home after a long trip. Did I really get what I was looking for ? or is it the mere feeling of possessing what I really wanted I am happy with ? Sochnaa padega....
Watched 1.Stop 2. Veer Zaara 3. HulChul 4. Aitraaz 5. Let's Enjoy 6. Saath Saath 7.Sholay in the last few days.

Galti ki Saza Paayega Kaun
I feel sad and very concerned at this very moment. Gymnastics has always been one of my favourite events, I love watching it and have the highest respect for these kids who probably gave away 10-15 years to their lives to compete at this level . But what do they see here, "incompetent fools" judging them ?...it saddens me deeply. My heart cries for Alexei Nemov and Yang Tae-Young both of these great atheletes had to face some judging errors/mistakes which 10 yrs from now maybe noone will remember. But for me both of them are real champions.

life ....moves so fast
You try to control it ...try to get hold of it. You think you are in control and now you can sit and relax but it humbles you yet again. You are low...you rethink your strategies and the fools we are, we again try to get control of things. But....
So the moral of this thought which came to my mind as I was making chaah is ..."kal kya hoga kiss ko pata, abhi zindagi ka le lo mazaaa"

bhagwaan
Aaj bahut hi ajeeb din tha....kuch nahi samajh aaya what happened. One stage I was feeling good about my work and progress and the very next moment it was all shattered. So dukhi ho gaya, hopefully will be alright and smiling again by tomorrow morning. But the thing is yeh to bhagwaan hain na...bada hi kadak personality. The moment you get slightest amount of pride..it just gives you a reverse swinging slap.
Buss nothing more....just vented out what I felt...waiting for fida to release....:)

long time
So after almost 6 days I am finally in a mood to write my blog. The reason being I am sitting on a very cool machine. My roommates Ajay Rao's computer....$1500 ka desktop hoga...sab kuch high end imagine kar lo and put it in.
Watched 1) Big Fish 2) The Village and 3) Bourne Supremacy....the 3) one was the best and 2) was also cool but it was 1) which was different..I slept in between the movie still could relate to wat was going on in the movie...over all three decent movies for a bored desi.
These days I am googling a lot...hehehe thats a secret term only some people will understand but anyways too much googling these days. I am also planning to buy a table and chair to take care of my back....just for those interested I bought a bed too.
Last week totally sucked work wise.....such a boring project I am working on. But is challenging at the same time...still would prefer something different. Talked to Anu, Alvi, Chinky, Pdot, Rishabh, Suman and so many people this weekend. Chalo more later....

Utaar gum ke mauzein (socks)..zameen ko gunguna de...
Kankano ko talwo pe gudgudii machaane de,

Went to Yosemite National Park (google mein search kar park ki website dekhein). Amazin place people.......were there for a few hours as we drove and came back the same day. It was awesome ...had such a huge impact on me that I wonder what a fool I was not to do this before. But der aaye daroost aaye...ab yahan ke natural resources ko chadha ki aadat lag jaayegi :)
Aur to saw "Once Upon a time in America"....bhaiyaan agar mood ho aur patience ho to yeh movie highly recommended.

The movie is Phir Milenge and the song is "khul ke Muskurale".....nice....hmmm...really nice :)

HB-2
Another one from Kukunoor....boss as Topi would say sahi movie hain. Not everything is new but the way he narrates the story makes it so good. The choice of actors and the script is excellent.
Music is awesome and nothing in the world impresses me more these days than Pakistani music. The movie has 2 excellent tracks from Fuzon.....a few lines from the song "Tere Bina"
Tere bina jiyaan nahi jaaye....
Tere he meine sapne sajaaye
Tere Bin ae sanam....kya khushi kaise gum
Tu chali aaye to...jee uthe phir se hum
Tu jo nahi to kya hain hum........
Tere bina jiyaan nahi jaaye....
Tere he meine sapne sajaaye
Rishi Rajan should ne reaching US pretty soon, Chinky is also reaching Sunnyvale tomorrow. The bad part of the day was that I ate pizza for dinner with volumes of Mountain Dew (summer red)
yum yum yum :)

why ?
Another sikh was attacked and this time not in a gas station in a secluded part of US..but in NY and that too in Richmond Hill. This happened on Sunday, don't know why but I was not feeling good ever since I read the news and after watching the video I felt like someone my own has been hit. Not just because he was a sikh but the way that old guy was badly beaten and still with his fractured nose and eye sockets he was saying "we are good people".
But then we went for a drive last night, so better now.

mamuu is back!!
Just came back from ny today. A very relaxing holiday, had a great time with kids. Both Jaskaran and Preet changed since I last saw them. Jaskaran is a poora gunda...saala tapori. Now life back to work:)..I was missing it already..hehehehe.
Right now just felt the perfect song for the moment...."Aao Naa" from the movie Kyun Ho gaya Na ...well sung song by Udit and Sadhana. The line "saazein dil chedo na...chup ho kyon gaao na" is so well sung by Udit, especially the way he says the word "Saazein".
I also wished I could write a review for Spiderman-2"....awesome movie, went for it on a Weekday...12:01-2:30 am show on a Tuesday night. Mein paagal aur mil gaya Ajay Somani mujhe...hona kya hain....yehi hona hain. But worth it....worth the hard work :)
Shall write a more descriptive blog for my trip hopefully sometime soon
